Believe it or not, just about everyone has to address their wisdom teeth at some point in their lifetime. Most commonly in your late teens or early twenties, your third and final set of molars will make their appearance; they are typically referred to as “wisdom teeth.”
Often, your mouth is simply not large enough to accommodate your wisdom teeth, and they will become partially or fully impacted. In some rare occasions, wisdom teeth will grow in straight and have enough room to grow.
Problems Caused By Wisdom Teeth
As stated above, make sure to ask us at one of your routine visits if your wisdom teeth are going to be an issue. More than likely, we can predict if they are going to grow in without a problem or need to be removed.
- Incredible Pain
- If your mouth is not large enough to accommodate your wisdom teeth, they will still grow; however, they will become impacted, which means that they will grow under your gums and may damage your existing teeth and nerves. The pain that comes with this can be unbearable and may not allow you to complete your daily activities. If you mask the pain with pain medicine, your wisdom will continue to grow, causing nerve damage to your other teeth.
- Crooked Teeth
- Again, your wisdom teeth will continue to grow, and if they are impacted, they will push the rest of your teeth forward causing them to overlap with one another. Crooked teeth have a long list of problems that they cause, such as difficulties cleaning, increased risk of cavities, tooth decay, and gum disease.
- Problem With Braces
- If we have decided that you will need braces and are ready to begin treatment and your wisdom teeth have not come in yet, then we may go ahead and remove your wisdom teeth ahead of time to prevent any complications with your orthodontic procedures.
