Many people believe root canals are a long and painful process. However, with advances in technology, root canals are usually a one-visit process that’s not much more involved than a dental filling. Dr. Melanie J. Andrews, experienced in family dentistry in Destrehan, LA, explains what you can expect from a root canal procedure.
How Do I Know if I Need a Root Canal?
There can be many signs and symptoms that indicate that you need a root canal. You need a root canal when the pulp of your tooth becomes infected or inflamed. It can be caused by a variety of things, including tooth decay making it to the pulp of your tooth, a cracked or chipped tooth, or repeated trauma or injury to the tooth
This infection may make itself known in various different ways. However, only a trained dentist can officially confirm that you have one. If you’re experiencing extreme tooth pain, sensitivity in a tooth, swelling, and tenderness in the gums or bone structure around the tooth, it’s time to call the dentist.
What to Expect From a Root Canal
When you arrive at your consultation at Plantation Road Dental Care, your tooth will be examined to confirm the infection in the pulp. If Dr. Andrews finds the infection, a local anesthetic will be administered into the affected area. Once it’s numbed, a dental dam is placed. This protects the tooth from saliva or debris during the root canal
A small hole is made in the tooth to access the affected area. The infected material is removed from the interior pulp chamber and root canal. Once these areas are fully cleaned out, they’re sealed with a biocompatible material to seal it. Dr. Andrews will often recommend that you get a dental crown for the tooth to stabilize it.
Same-Day Dental Crowns
Plantation Road Dental Care is proud to offer CEREC same-day dental crowns. After your root canal, we’ll use advanced camera technology to get a clear image of the tooth that needs the crown. With our in-office milling machine, a custom crown is crafted out of high-end dental porcelain material.
The digital impression of your tooth eliminates the need for messy impressions. With the advanced software, you get a crown that’s a perfect fit for your tooth on the same day as your root canal. You don’t need to wait for weeks with an ill-fitting temporary crown while you wait for your own.
