Why Is Gum Health Important?

Did you know that gum disease is a leading cause of tooth loss in adults?

Recent studies have shown the ongoing prevalence of gum disease, with over 40% of adults having some form of disease. Gum disease is considered an ongoing health concern due to the mouth-body connection and the impact that it can have on overall wellness. The frustrating factor is that gum disease is largely preventable with routine dental care and good oral hygiene.

Dr. Andrews emphasizes the importance of maintaining gum health and our dental care team screens for the early warning signs during routine exams and teeth cleanings. When caught early, symptoms are typically treatable with conservative measures. We offer comprehensive periodontal therapy for treating gum disease.

Barriers to Infection

The gums serve an important role as a barrier between harmful bacteria in the mouth and our bloodstream. When the structure of the gums is affected by infection, it can break down and allow bacteria to enter the bloodstream. This can set off an inflammatory immune response which can increase the risk for systemic conditions. Poor gum health also raises the risk of cardiovascular disease and can make it more difficult to manage existing conditions such as diabetes.

Healthy gum tissue also plays a role in supporting tooth structure. The gums nurture the tooth roots and help keep your teeth in place. If gum disease is able to progress, deep pockets can form around the tooth roots. These pockets not only harbor infection but weaken tooth roots. Shifting of teeth, tooth decay and even tooth loss can result over time.

How do I maintain healthy gums?

There are two important factors in the long term maintenance of healthy and stable gums:

  • Regukar visits to the dentist: visiting with Dr. Andrews and our dental care team twice a year will significantly reduce your risk for developing gum disease. Routine screenings and teeth cleanings mean that we can spot early signs and remove any built up plaque which could lead to gingivitis.
  • Daily oral hygiene: brushing the teeth and flossing daily is extremely important for your gum health and overall dental health. We recommend a soft-bristled toothbrush to avoid irritating the gums.
  • A healthy diet and drinking water during and after meals to rinse food from the teeth and gums also helps minimize bacteria and prevent disease.
